January/February 2012 Classes

 

Fuzzy Wuzzy's goal is to have a comprehensive class list and teach classes where the students learn something new --- either a technique or an improved way of doing one!  More classes are always being added.  Please check back!

 

If a class says "call the store", it means we will try to accommodate your schedule --- so please do call!

 

Private classes are available at a cost of $20/hour.  Please call or visit the store to arrange.

 

Inna Voltchkova is back teaching Russian Lace at Fuzzy Wuzzy Yarns this winter.

 

Learn her latest pattern published in Piecework's 2011 Lace Issue --- a diamond lace scarf called The Year of the Dragon Scarf.  Students will learn Orenburg lace knitting techniques and diagonal and strawberry motifs along with  lace chart reading.  Students should know how to knit, purl, increase and decrease.  Two two-hour classes - $50 plus supplies.  An additional $5 payable to teacher for color copies of lace patterns/charts will be due at the first class.

The Ushki Hat

 

Learn to make Inna's non-traditionally constructed hat with a wave-shaped brim with bobbled-edge that covers the ears.  Two two-hour classes - $50 plus supplies.

Kollage Yarns Feed Your Creativity Classes

 

Something new at Fuzzy Wuzzy!!!  Monthly classes with specific projects that give you a chance to try out Kollage's fabulous yarns!   Colors are unique for each student which are first come, first serve in terms of color choice (they are all beautiful!)  Get everything you need in a neat little project bag -  to make Dangerous Curves Cowl- a curvy lace rib cowl designed for Kollage by Sandi Rosner.  One two hour class - $20 plus $   kit.

Convertible Mitts/Flip-top Gloves

 

Hard to find a well-written pattern to make these, but this one fills the bill!!!  Kelly's teaching these smart-phone friendly mitts in a three-session workshop.   Made in sock/fingering weight. Three two-hour sessions - $60 plus supplies.

Fingerless Mitts

 

Learn to make these beautiful patterned, fingerless mitts with picot-edging that works in a variety of fibers and weights of yarn.  Students should be familiar with working on double-point needles.  Basic mitten construction techniques will be taught in this class.  Two two-hour classes --- $45 plus supplies.

Ringed-Cuff Mittens

 

Come learn how to make the Ringed-Cuff Beginner Mittens. These are the ones you’ve all been eyeing and trying on in the store!!! I love how they fit, and they fit everyone!  Students should be familiar with knit, purl, increases, decreases, and knitting in the round on dpn's.

 

Techniques students will learn are:

1) Knitting mittens with double pointed needles (DPN’s) in the round.
2) Unique horizontal ribbed cuff design.
3) Thumb gusset.
4) Top decrease.
5) Finishing the thumb.

 

After this class, you will know the basic mitten techniques well enough to inspire you to create many pairs of mittens for your family and friends. Wonderful small gift items for warmth and wear!!!  Three two-hour class sessions - $60 plus supplies.  Class minimum:  3 students.

Thrummed Mittens

 

You will learn how to knit with roving to make the coziest, softest, warmest,and FUZZYest mittens that are just plain fun to wear!!!  Students should have made basic mittens before this class.  Two two-hour classes --- $50 plus supplies.

Woolie Bullie Mitts

 

Try something new and display your knitting talents all winter long!  This cozy, warm pair of mittens simply begs to be knit!  A quick-knit gift that's fun to wear.

Pattern purchase is required, and students should know how to knit, purl, and be familiar with knitting on double-point needles.  Techniques learned include how to do right-hand and left-hand shaping, right and left increases and whip stitch detail.  Three two-hour class sessions --- $60 plus supplies.  Class minimum:  3 students.

Jenni's Helix Scarf Class

 

This fun scarf is knitted in short row wedges that make it ruffle on each side of the central strip with a special fun-to-do edge.  It's a very simple project that is easy to tote around and the knitting sequence is easy to remember.  This scarf works well with any weight yarn.  Try a luxurious blend or a fun, self-striping yarn!  Learn to W&T and understand what this term means!  Student must be able to cast-on, knit and bind off.  One

1-hour class - $20.

Learn how to make this popular pattern!  It's a scarf, shawlette, neckwrap all in one!  One skein of sock yarn makes this simple lace pattern!  One 1-hour class - $20 plus supplies.

What’s New to You Skill Building Class --- Knitting

 

Wanting to make that first sweater, but a little afraid to attempt it on your own?  This is the class to get you started!!!  For those who already know basic knitting skills and are ready for a project that’s more challenging!  Students choose a project that's 'New to You'.  Learn the skills to complete your chosen project from start to finish! 

  

4 classes - $75 plus materials for project.  Maximum - 10 students

Twelve Months of Creativity!

 

"In the month of January, my creativity gave to me 12 mods a coasting ......., in the month of February my creativity gave to me, 11 sweet hearts...., in the month of March my creativity gave to me, 10 lucky Irish.....,  in the month of April my creativity gave to me 9 birds a-chirping, in the month of May 8 miters a-washing....., in the month of June my creativity gave to me 7 fireflies flashing, in the month of July 6 bubbles popping...........,  in the month of August 5 bubbles  felting..........., in the month of September 4 beads shining,  in October................, in November 2 mornings walking..................."

 

All of our teachers are collaborating on this class!  Spend one day a month and come home with knitted and/or crocheted item suitable for gifting (or keeping if you can't bear to part with it --- or maybe both!).  $20 per class plus supplies.

Intro to Fair Isle Hat

 

In our intro to 2-color Fair Isle (Stranding) Class, you will learn to hold one color in each hand to create a beautiful hat in the colors of your choice!  Student must be able to knit in the round, and do an SSK and K2TOG.  Two 2-hour classes - $50.

Basic Simple Hat

 

Ready to take your knitting a little beyond beginner?  Learn how to make a simple mini-hat while learning to knit in the round, make jogless stripes and how to do decreases.  One two-hour class will teach you the basics of hat knitting.  $35 plus supplies.

Beginning Knitting

 

For beginners with no previous experience - Learn the basics of knitting from casting on to binding off.  4 classes - $75.  Maximum: 10 students

Refresher Knitting Class


For those with some knowledge of knitting who need a quick refresher course on the basics - cast on, knit, purl, increase, decrease, bind off. 1 one-hour class - $20

Basic Mini-Sock

 

Make a scaled-down mini-sock in just a few hours!  This is a great class to learn the fundamentals of sock construction within a short time frame!  Students will leave class with the ability to knit a regular-sized sock on their own, from casting on to turning the heel, and finishing with the Kitchener bind off.  One two and a half hour class - $45.

"Sox in the City" - Beginning Socks Class

 

"Every once in awhile, a girl has to indulge herself!"  (Carrie Bradshaw)  Surround your toes with a cozy pair of hand-knit socks!  Our beginning class starts you on your journey with an easy worsted weight yarn and size 5 needles.  You'll learn the German Twisted cast-on, knit your sock from cuff to toe, learn the true meaning of "Sit, stay and heel", master the stick trick and graduate as an accomplished grafter (kitchener stitcher) by the time you're finished.  Store-bought socks = Fashion Roadkill!  Indulge yourself!  Students need to know how to knit, purl and do decreases (k2tog and ssk).   3 classes - $60 plus supplies.  Maximum: 6 students.

Toe-Up Sox in the City

 

You know you want to --- learn to go both ways!  Indulge that sox sensation in reverse.  Learn the tips and tricks for knitting socks from toe to cuff!  Never worry your sox-y-self about running out of yarn, put these on your feet as you go!  Ooh la la!!!  Students should have made at least one pair of socks cuff down prior to taking this class.  Learn the "Magics of Sock Knitting"!   Two 2-hour classes - $40.

Finishing Class

 

You've finally finished knitting your sweater!  Now learn how to sew it together so you can wear it!  Students should come with their sweater or project blocked and ready to be sewn together.  If you don't know how to block, ask when you sign up for the class.  If you don't have a project but still want to take the class, ask for pre-class homework.  One two-hour class - $45.

 Jenni's Navigating Ravelry!!!

 

Nobody does it better than Jenni!!! This is one of our most popular classes!!!  You will be learning how to navigate the basics on Ravelry --- how to join and set up your notebook, find patterns, find yarn information, join groups, and uploading pictures.  If you don't know what Ravelry is,  this class will rock your knitting/crochet world!!!  And even if you do know what it is - but want to know more, this is the class for you!  $20 per person - cost includes a take-home package with everything covered in class.  Open to as many as we can seat --- we will have a projector and a screen.

The Ishbel

 

Come knit this beautiful, poplular shawl pattern by Ysolda Teague under the guidance of our teaching staff!  This is a great class for advanced beginner to intermediate knitters wanting to learn chart reading as the charts are easy to follow.  Participants will need to purchase their own pattern from Ravelry and yarn prior to class.  Each session is $15.  Students are not required to attend all three sessions, but must attend the first one.  Class minimum:  3 students.

Socks with Sylvia

 

Learn to make socks in sock-weight yarn!  This three-session class meets every other week and takes you through the basics of making well-fitting socks!  $60 plus supplies.  Class minimum:  3 students.

Leaf Lace Socks with Sylvia

 

One session workshop to go beyond basic socks.  Learn to expand on your chart reading skills and take your sock construction beyond the ordinary.  Excellent class for those who have taken a basic sock class and want to venture into patterned socks!  One two-hour class - $20.

The Great American Afghan


This class is taught in a series of blocks that use the same techniques rather than a block at a time.  Students will then have time to complete those blocks.  Class will meet once a month on Saturday mornings.  This is an on-going class with new students joining each session.  Class is normally held the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. - 12 noon.  $15 per class.

Beginning Crochet

 

Part One covers holding yarn and tension, holding hook and wrapping yarn correctly, then chain, single, half double, double, and treble crochet, making a swatch with those 5 stitches.  In Part Two, we will review how to make the stitches, then learn to read a simple pattern to make one of two scarves - a simple mesh scarf or a two-stitch texture scarf. We will also cover how to simply increase or decrease the width of the scarf by knowing the stitch pattern repeat.  2 two-hour classes - $50.  Maximum - 10 students

Intermediate Crochet ---

 

Circles, Squares, and Shells! Oh My!

 

Part One will be a quick stitch review and students will learn to follow patterns to both crochet in the round and crochet a square motif. We will also cover how to make simple shell and v-stitches.

In Part Two, we will use the stitches learned in the first class to put two of the elements together to make a hat - circle for the crown, then a shell stitch to make the body of the hat.  2 two-hour classes - $50.

Chemo Caps & Wraps is an all-crochet book of projects that can be created to make a difference in the life of someone diagnosed with cancer.  The items chosen for these classes can either be made for someone you care for or for yourself!  The yarns selected are suitable for charitable donations or for you to sport a new chapeau or wrap!  Chemo Caps and Wraps book is required for this class.  Portion of the sale of this book is donated to Halos of Hope, an organization dedicated to comforting those living through chemotherapy.

 

Spiral Rib Crocheted Cap

 

This flirty, feminine cap is much easier than it looks!  Solid colorways create an elegant look; variegated colorways make if fun and festive.  This is an intermediate crochet class.  Knowledge required:  single crochet (sc), double-crochet (dc) and experience working in continuous rounds.  Familiarity with front-post dc and back-post dc is helpful, but not necessary.  Learn the twisted double-crochet foundation and a twisted cross-stitch technique in this class.  Requires sizes H and I crochet hooks.  Please bring a crochet-friendly stitch marker.  One three-hour class - $35 ($5 of each class fee will be donated to Halos of Hope!).

Crochet Ribbed Hat

 

Are you ready to use your double-crochet skills to make ribbing?  We'll get the techniques for this easy chunky cap down so you, or a loved one, can be warm and cozy for the coming winter months.  Requires a K crochet hook.  Class teaches how to start from the bottom-up with a ribbed brim, and to join your work in the round.  Students should know single-crochet (sc) and double-crochet (dc).  Class will show you how to work in the back loop of your stitches, and how to alternate front-post double-crochet (fpdc) and back-post double-crochet (bpdc) to create ribbing as well as learn how to decrease in ribbing in pattern. Coming this Fall!!!

  

 

Knitting Techniques Mini-Sessions
 
If you need a little help with the following techniques, we are offering mini-sessions
to help you advance your knitting skills.  Each session is a half-hour and costs $10.  Sessions start promptly and some require a little homework.  Since these sessions are short, please be prepared when you arrive.  These sessions are for beginners who know how to knit and purl.  PRE-REGISTRY FOR THESE CLASSES IS REQUIRED!

Still not quite sure how these work?  We'll show you three methods. Bring  your needles and scrap yarn with 20 stitches cast on and one inch of stockinette stitch.

We'll show you how to get them back on your needles!  Bring your needles and scrap yarn with 20 stitches cast on and two inches of stockinette stitch.
 
2:00 - 2:30 p.m.         CABLES

 

Nothing to be afraid of!  Bring needles and scrap yarn with 18 stitches cast on and one inch of stockinette stitch.
 
2:45 - 3:15 p.m.      KNITTING IN THE ROUND 

 

Learn some basics, tips and tricks?  Bring 16"

 The Swirl Shawl


Come learn the techniques used to create this beautiful shawl - or do the scarf version if you want!  2 classes - $40 (pattern included in the class fee) plus yarn required for either the shawl or scarf.  This class is for intermediate to advanced knitters familiar with working on double point needles.
